History of Davao International Airport
When it first opened in the 1940s, the airport served weekly flights via Philippine Airlines and the Philippine Air Force only. For many years, DVO also served as an outpost for the American Air Force.
In 1959, the airport complex had a small control tower and several small buildings. From this time, land acquisitions and improvements to airport facilities were made until 1980, when the runway was extended from 1,200 meters to its current 3,000-meter length.
It also became the hub for charter flights to many Philippine tourist destinations such as Mindanao, Palawan, Sulu Sea, and Boracay. Due to its strategic location and increasing passenger traffic, Davao International Airport has also become a growing transit point for passengers traveling between Southeast Asia and other Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
DVO is the focus city for Cebu Pacific, PAL Express, Philippine Airlines, and Philippines AirAsia with daily flights to Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Cebu, Clark, Iloilo, Manila, Tagbilaran, Zamboanga, Siargao, among others.
It boasts a modern airport terminal building with 28 gates for domestic and international passengers, three lounge areas, and two baggage conveyors for domestic and international destinations.
In 2018, 4.2 million domestic and 1.6 million international passengers passed through Davao International Airport.
